1-2. So, everyone, do you know the word “motive”? It refers to the reasons or intentions behind our actions. For instance, waking up early to meet a friend or resisting sweets for a diet both have motives behind them. This “motive” is actually a fundamental part of psychology, and various scientists have been conducting studies on it. Interestingly, motives have the power to “move” our actions, much like a little engine inside our hearts!

2-2. In the world of motives, there are actually two types: “intrinsic motives” and “extrinsic motives”! Intrinsic motives arise from interest or enjoyment, giving you that delightful feeling when you do something you love. On the other hand, extrinsic motives are focused on rewards or recognition, like “to earn money” or “to get praised.” Interestingly, when intrinsic motives are strong, people might lose interest even if there are external rewards. So, it’s possible to think, “I was doing it because it was fun, but now that money’s involved, it’s lost its charm!”

3-2. Now, did you know that when thinking about “motives,” an unexpected important element is the “environment”? Studies show that the atmosphere around us and the behavior of others significantly influence our motives. For instance, when you see your friends jogging, you might think, “Oh, I want to join in too!” Conversely, if everyone is lounging on the couch, it’s easy to think, “Well, I guess it’s fine.” The environment is like a magical concoction that shapes our motives!

4-2. Interestingly, motives are also heavily influenced by “social comparison”! Humans are creatures that compare themselves to others, and this tendency has been amplified by social media. For instance, seeing your friend’s amazing travel photos can spark the motive, “I want to go somewhere too!” But at the same time, it might also induce a sense of competition, like “I want to take better photos!” In this way, comparisons with others can stimulate our motives and prompt us to take action.

5-2. Lastly, motives are closely linked to our health and happiness! For instance, research shows that having an intrinsic motive like “exercising to achieve my goals” can significantly increase our chances of staying healthy both mentally and physically. Exercising releases endorphins, which provide that “feel-good” sensation. It’s exciting to think about how much our motives can enrich our lives! The fact that striving toward our purposes can actually contribute to our mental and physical health is quite surprising!
